WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT WRITING?

May 1, 2010

“Your first job is to get your own story straight." ~ Natalie Goldberg

"Write something to suit yourself and many people will like it; write something to suit everybody and scarcely anyone will care for it." ~ Jesse Stuart

If you're still struggling to get your manuscript written and complete, please, get the support you need, don't wait until "someday"—it rarely, if ever, arrives. But, if you're a writer or entrepreneur, you probably know all the great reasons to write a non-fiction book. As a published author, you are regarded as an expert in your field. When you are a book author, you gain the following:

• Credibility with potential clients and the media;

• A tangible product you can sell and use as a stepping-stone to higher priced products such as consulting or multimedia information packages;

• The satisfaction of bringing your ideas out into the world;

• The reality is that if you have written 50,000 words on a topic, you probably know more than the gal or guy who has not written 50,000 words;

• When you are an author, you stand out;

Yet, even with all those great reasons to write a book, many books never see the light of day. Many people wonder how to write a book. I've written seven of them: two with NYU Press (a traditional publishing firm), five with my own publishing firm, Life Design Publishing.

Whatever you decide, if you commit to the job (yes, if you already have a job, your writing and publishing will feel like a second job); it will get done!

Take it “one day at a time,” as my AA friends say. It is totally possible if you do things the way ants do, one little thing at a time.

Because I like all things philosophical and psychological, I write about these kinds of reflections. What do you like to write about? Are you sharing these thoughts and felt experiences with others? If you want to, please schedule a sample session – a complimentary 30" discussion of what we might create together to get your voice out and into the world.
